The room

The workshop is the ground-floor room at 22 Florentin Street, Florentin, Tel Aviv–Yafo, postal code 6608323. The door you want is the street door on the left, at pavement level. It is not the stair up to the flats. The hours are on a paper in the window. The name is not painted across the glass.

The street window of a small ground-floor workshop, a cutting table and a rail of plain clothes inside, with no sign on the glass.
The window looks onto the street. The cutting table sits in that light. There is no painted sign to hunt for.
A heavy unbranded iron standing on folded linen on an ironing board.
Pressing is part of the job. Wool is pressed under a cloth. Linen is pressed, and then it creases again.

Inside there is one cutting table, a lockstitch machine, a blind-hem machine, a domestic iron, a rail, a dress form, and a jar of plain buttons. Tickets live on a spike by the door. It is a neighbourhood workshop. It is not a salon, and there is nowhere to wait for an hour. If you are early for a fitting, the street is the waiting room. Abarbanel and HaMashor are the corners just off this block. Tsrifin is the other small street the postal map puts next to us.

Who comes in the morning

Drop-off is 9:00 to 12:00, Sunday to Friday, without an appointment, for a hem, a zip, a button, a tear, or a waist on a garment you already own. Come in, we look at the cloth, we agree the price, we write the ticket, you leave. If the afternoon is when you finish work, that is unfortunate for a new drop-off. We will not start a fresh garment at 16:30. Collection is the thing the afternoon is for: Sunday to Thursday, 15:00 to 18:00, once we have told you it is ready.

Friday the door is open 9:00 to 13:00. You may leave a garment, and you may collect one that is already marked ready. You may not have a fitting. The machines stop at 13:00, and a garment left on Friday does not start its working days until Sunday. Saturday the room is closed. Do not plan a collection “on the way to something” that Saturday. It will not be open.

The company is Seam Room Ltd., in Hebrew חדר התפר בע״מ, company number 516428372. Invoices use that name and that number. The people at the table are the same people who answer the phone. There is no separate “front of house.”

Fittings, and why they are booked

A fitting needs the mirror, the board, and a stretch of time when we are not unpicking someone else’s zip. That is why it is an appointment. Made-to-measure always is. A wedding hem always is. A trouser hem usually is not: you can leave trousers in the morning and, if you want to see the pin, we will book you a short look on a later afternoon before we sew. If you are happy with “2 cm, no fitting,” we write that and we do not book the mirror.

Please be on time. A fitting that starts twenty minutes late collides with the next one, and we will shorten yours rather than steal the next person’s slot. If you cannot come, write that morning. A missed fitting moves the ready date. It does not oblige us to open on Saturday to catch up.

Finding the street

Florentin Street is in the middle of the neighbourhood, not on the lighting row of Wolfson and not up on Rothschild. From Levinsky Market, walk south for about eight minutes. From Neve Tzedek, walk east for about twelve. From the old bus station, come west through Neve Sha'anan, about twelve minutes once you are in those streets, a little more from the station doors. A longer list of neighbourhoods, with rough times, is on the front page. It is a list we wrote, not an embedded map.

Buses run along Salame Road and Eilat Street. We do not print a line number, because the numbers change and a wrong one is worse than none. If you are driving, do not count on stopping outside the door. The street is narrow, and a car in front of the window blocks the light we sew by. Park where you can and walk the last streets.

If the paper hours are up and the door is shut in the middle of a stated morning, knock once. We may be in the back with the iron. If nobody comes, we are closed for that hour and the ticket spike will tell you when we wrote the next opening. Do not leave a garment on the step. We are not responsible for cloth we never took in, and a bag by the door in Florentin is not a system.
